Recorded crime by municipality, 12 months to Q2 2026

This dataset gives the criminal offences recorded by the police in each Spanish municipality with more than twenty thousand inhabitants, and in every provincial capital, as published by the Interior Ministry in its quarterly Balance de Criminalidad. The Ministry's figures run from January to the end of each quarter; we convert them into a rolling twelve months, so towns can be compared over a full year at any point in the calendar.

For each town we give the total and the main types published by the Ministry, and two rates per thousand people: one over registered residents, and one over residents plus the average number of people staying in tourist flats. The second rate matters in resort towns, where visitors are many and not registered. Recorded crime reflects reporting and policing as well as crime itself, so compare towns of similar kind.

How it is calculated

Twelve months to the end of the latest quarter: the year-to-date total, plus last year's full-year total, minus last year's total to the same quarter. Rates per thousand: over the Padrón, and over the Padrón plus tourist-let beds times the province's average occupancy for the same months. Without occupancy data there is no second rate.

Methods

How we calculate recorded crime

The Interior Ministry's Balance de Criminalidad publishes offences recorded by the police in municipalities with more than twenty thousand inhabitants and in provincial capitals, as totals accumulated from January to the end of each quarter. To compare towns over a full year, we use the latest twelve months: this year's total to date, plus last year's full-year total, minus last year's total to the same quarter. At the end of the year it is simply the annual total. If last year's figures are missing, there is no value.

We then give two rates per thousand people. The first divides by registered residents (the Padrón). The second divides by residents plus the people staying in tourist flats, estimated as tourist-let beds times the province's average occupancy of tourist flats over the same months. In resort towns the second rate is closer to the number of people actually present. If occupancy data is missing for those months, only the first rate is shown.

Recorded crime depends on how often people report and on police activity, not only on how much crime there is.

How we calculate zone and province figures

A zone or province figure combines the values of its municipalities that have data, weighted by population, and states how many of them have the figure. When an agency publishes a value directly for the province, we use the published value and say so. A combined figure describes the area as a whole; towns within it can differ a lot, and their own pages show it.
